The area in the outskirts of the town now known as Parco Castangias (Castangias Park) was once a beautiful forest filled with cherry trees, European nettle trees, walnut trees and first and foremost chestnut trees, from which the place gets its name.

The hollow of Castangias can be considered as the cradle of Villacidro: the source of the Fluminera river is found here and the town itself was established along its banks, protected by the steep slopes of Mount Omo and Mount Cuccureddu. The abundance of water has always characterized the park’s area, so much so that from 1928 to 1932 the aqueduct gathering the waters of the many sources nearby was built here in order to distribute them to the municipality.

The aqueduct’s structure is similar in style to that of Tuscan villas, giving the area an elegant and luxurious appeal. In fact, the park was the destination of continuous strolls for holidaymakers who had chosen Villacidro as their holiday location.

The park has been recently restored back to its former beauty and is an excellent point from which to leave for the Coxinas plateau as well as for several other extremely evocative panoramic areas from which visitors can admire the mountains embracing the town of Villacidro. The area has never lost its natural charm and is the traditional destination of relaxing and refreshing strolls.

Author's words

Who is that galloping along the plateau, behind the calves, with a face that is never hard? It is my father. It is he who carries me on his saddle up to the chestnut tree where there is a spring so dark and frozen that the horse on lowering its neck hardly touched it. The hunter in green velvet knows of the water from winds of thyme and wild countryside…
