Belvedere Giarranas

Piazzale Giarranas, often mentioned in the novels written by Giuseppe Dessì, is renowned for the imposing granite spires called "Is Campanas de Sisinni Contu" (Sissinni Contu’s bells).

The name Giarranas recalls an ancient legend that narrates the story of a shepherd, his sheep and its cowbell that, when falling from the granite spire, made a noise that echoes through the rocks to this day.

These are particular geological conformations that have given origin to an enchanting landscape, a sought-after destination for hikers. This interesting panoramic point offers a view of the mountains surrounding Villacidro, its entire residential area and the famous Sa Spendula waterfall originated from rio Coxinas river that flows through the hollow below the square.

There is also a broad view to be admired of the level land below Villacidro. On a clear day, the peaks of Gennargentu can also be admired.

Originally, this “terrace” was known as Genn’e Arrà. It has been modified to include boulevards and plants, becoming an obligatory stop for tourists who can arrive by following a narrow road through the pine grove, passing in front of the new, modern facilities which make the waters drinkable, at a certain point there is a fork in the road and leads to Castangias and the pineta del Carmine pine grove.

Departure points for routes leading to some of the beautiful of the Linas mountain’s peaks such as Santu Miali or Monte Margiani are only a stone’s throw from this “terrace".
