Guspini

Guspini has many tales to tell. Stories of civilizations from thousands of years ago which settles here, leaving profound imprints and monuments of great archaeological and historical interest.

Tales of faith and religion that can be retraced through its ancient churches filled with architectural detail and spirituality like the church of Santa Maria di Malta (11th century) that recalls the fascinating history of the order of the Knights of Malta and the church of San Nicolò di Mira which features a splendid rose window in stone.

Stories of a Nature that generously left great environmental and natural resources such as the unique columns of basalt, an extremely rare geological formation that dates back about 3 million years with their characteristic “organ pipe” shapes. A tale of a past that is profoundly tied to peasant life and farming, tales that speaks of mining and hard work.
The intense mining activity linked to the Montevecchio mine, considered in the past as Europe’s most avant-garde the centre of lead and zinc mining, has left deep traces and an archaeological-industrial heritage of remarkable importance.

Along the road leading from Guspini to the village, there is a series of imposing structures: mining wells, washhouses, work sites, workshops, administrative buildings, the hospital and the chapel dedicated to Santa Barbara. Everything here is capable of offering intense emotions that stir up a sense of astonishment. Above all, everything here is immersed in the silence of the woods and tells stories of the labour and toil of men, women and children.
