Il disertore

In Il disertore, the protagonist is silence.

The silence of a world that suffers death, departure, war, uprooting for reasons that are unfathomable. Winner of the Premio Bagutta award, the novel published in 1961 deals with the subject of war in a singular and authentic fashion.

Characters: an old mother, a priest and the deserter, the son who survived and returns home to his mother. He hides in his sheep pen in the middle of the woods, in his mountains. He dies here after only five days. This is the second son that Mariangela Ecca loses to the war and her only refuge is in her silence, in the silence of her mountains and the Monument to the Fallen where the names of her sons are also engraved.
